The Most Popular Court Size in Canada. Here's Why.
Medium courts between 1,000 and 2,000 sq ft hit the sweet spot for Canadian families: enough room for the full range of backyard sports, a natural fit for winter ice rink conversions, and a size that works on most residential properties.
The Sweet Spot for Canadian Backyards
If you’re looking for one court that does it all, a medium court is almost certainly what you want. This is our most popular size range — and for good reason.
Between 1,000 and 2,000 sq ft, medium courts open up the full range of backyard sports. Pickleball, badminton, volleyball, and ball hockey all fit comfortably. You can also accommodate a full basketball half-court with a complete 3-point line from baseline to baseline, which simply isn’t possible on a small court.
Medium courts are also the most popular choice for families who want to convert their court to a backyard ice rink in the winter. The flat, level surface is ideal for natural ice, and with a refrigeration system you can skate no matter what the weather decides to do.
Typical size range: 1,000–2,000 sq ft Typical budget range: $40,000–$75,000+
Budget includes the concrete base and may vary based on location, complexity, and accessories chosen. Does not include an ice refrigeration system.
Medium Courts Work Best When...
- You want one court that supports multiple sports for the whole family
- Pickleball is on the list — you need at least this size to play properly
- Basketball is important and you want a full 3-point line
- A winter ice rink conversion is part of the dream
- You have a mid-size backyard and want to maximize what it can do
- You’re thinking about badminton, volleyball, or ball hockey alongside basketball
If you’re primarily focused on basketball only and your space is limited, a Small Court might be a better fit.
If you want full-court basketball or regulation tennis, you’ll want to look at Large or Full Size Courts.
Summer Court. Winter Rink. Same Slab.
One of the best things about a medium court is what it becomes in January.
The same flat, level concrete base that makes for a great sport surface in the summer is the perfect foundation for a backyard ice rink in the winter. Medium courts give you enough skating room to actually enjoy it — not just shuffle around a tiny patch of ice.
You have two options for freezing your rink. Natural freezing works well in most Canadian winters and costs nothing beyond the water. A refrigeration system gives you reliable ice regardless of temperature fluctuations — perfect for families who want to skate from December through March no matter what the forecast says.
Ice refrigeration systems are available as a separate project and are not included in the court budget range.

Surface Options
Choose Your Surface
Medium courts are available with two premium surface systems. Both are built for year-round Canadian outdoor use — the right choice depends on your priorities, your sports, and how you plan to use the court.
SnapSports Modular Tiles
Interlocking sport tiles that sit on your concrete base, delivering consistent performance, excellent drainage, and a professional look. Available in multiple colours and performance tiers from Base Court through Revolution HP. The modular design also makes medium courts particularly well-suited for ice rink conversions — the tiles can be cleared in winter and reinstalled in spring.
Acrylic Court Surface
A smooth, liquid-applied coating system bonded directly to your concrete base. The classic outdoor court finish — clean, durable, and available in a range of colours. Works beautifully for multi-sport line configurations and natural ice rink use in winter.

Common Questions
Medium Courts, Answered
What's the minimum size I need for a pickleball court?
A regulation pickleball court is 20′ x 44′. You’ll want some room around the court for safe play, so most pickleball setups in a backyard context need at least 1,000 sq ft to work comfortably. Medium courts are the starting point for pickleball, and many clients fit multiple pickleball courts within this size range depending on the overall court dimensions.
Can I fit both basketball and pickleball on the same medium court?
Yes — multi-sport line configurations are one of the most popular choices in this size range. A well-designed medium court can accommodate basketball and pickleball lines on the same surface, with each sport’s lines in different colours to keep things clear during play. Our design team handles this during the planning phase.
How does the ice rink conversion work?
Your concrete base stays in place year-round. In the winter, you flood the surface to build up natural ice, the same way a backyard rink works on any flat surface. The court’s level, sealed base makes it significantly easier to maintain consistent ice quality than a natural grass yard. If you want reliable ice regardless of temperature, a refrigeration system can be added as a separate project.
Does the budget include the multi-sport net system?
The typical budget range of $40,000–$75,000+ includes the concrete base and the playing surface. Basketball systems, multi-sport net systems, containment netting, lighting, and custom logos are available as add-ons and will be factored into your final project estimate. We’ll walk you through every option so there are no surprises.
How long does installation take?
Most medium court installations are completed in two to three days once the concrete base is ready. From the time you sign off on your project, TSS typically has clients playing on their new court within four weeks.
Can I add a second sport later?
Yes. SnapSports modular tile surfaces can be reconfigured with new line markings as your needs change. Acrylic surfaces can also be relined. If you think your needs might evolve, mention it during your consultation and we’ll design the court with that flexibility in mind from the start.
